Abstract : To determine the role of hyperlipidaemia in diabetes, we studied 1006 diabetic patients admitted to King Abdulaziz University Hospital in the period mean age of the patients was 54+16 years and the male: female ratio was 1.2:1. Hyperlipidaemia was found in 21% of patients, and was significantly associated with ishchaemic heart disease (IHD), poor glycaemic control, renal impairment, and mortality. Thirty-one per cent of patients with hyperlipidaemia and IHD, 83% had poor glycaemic control, 21% had renal impairment, and 22% died, versus 18%, 62%, 16%, and 11% of those without hyperlipidaemia (p0.005,< 0.001, 0.08, 0.002respectivly). future studies are needed on the effort of lipid control on glyaemic control and diabetic mortality.
