Abstract : Pregnancy is a physiological state accompanied by a high-energy demand. Augmented levels of oxidative stress would be expected because of the increased intake and utilization of oxygen. Therefore this study was designed to evaluate the changes in the maternal lipid profile, and to correlate these parameters with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels among healthy pregnant women. The study included 100 women classified into four groups: healthy, non-pregnant women (n=25) as a control group, pregnant women in the first trimester (n=25), pregnant women in the second trimester (n=25) and pregnant women in the third trimester (n=25. BMI was calculated for each subject. Fasting blood sample was withdrawn from each subject. Serum was used for determination of lipid profile parameters, 8- hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHDG), 8-iso prostaglandin F2α (8-ISO-PGF2a) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Results indicated significantly increased mean values of BMI, lipid profile parameters, 8-OHDG, 8-ISO-PGF2a and significant decreased in mean value of TAC in the pregnant groups compared to non- pregnant group. The maternal lipid profile were positively correlated with 8-OHDG and 8-ISO-PGF2a and negatively correlated with TAC. These results suggest that normal pregnancy is associated with dyslipidemia, and oxidative stress which increased by advancing gestational age.
