Abstract : This research aims to identify the environmental effect of random landfills in Makkah, and the identification of sites and components of the random landfills which provides us with a comprehensive view of the current status of these random landfills, and to develop awareness and will for future planning in the field of environment and sustainable development under the vision of Saudi Arabia 2030. To achieve the objectives of the research was used descriptive analytical approach to data and information from different sources and analysis, and draw conclusions from them, and develop solutions and recommendations appropriate, the quantitative approach in calculating the areas of random landfills, and the development of contaminant maps through soil dumps samples, where 10 samples were selected from each dump after displacement of about 30 cm to avoid the direct impact of waste on the soil and then take the soil sample, up to 30 cm deep. The incomplete inductive approach is used, which is to be satisfied with some of the particles of the matter and study on them, to issue general provisions covering all aspects of the matter that was not under study. The environmental approach in providing accurate information on the random landfills and the associated environmental problems, in order to make the right decisions about how to live with them and solve them. The study included four chapters. The first was the general framework of the study, which included the introduction of the study, the problem of the study, the study area, the study questions, the importance of the study, the objectives of the study, the study methodology, resources of study data, and previous studies.Chapter two discuss the effect of natural and human characteristics on the random landfills in the study area of topography, geology, climate, soil, vegetation and population of the study area. Chapter Three deals with the analysis of the results of the study of the location of random landfills and their impact on the environment of the city of Makkah, public health, surface water, groundwater and soil. The fourth chapter deal with the results and recommendations of the study, the most important of which were: 1- The number of random dumps in the city of Makkah, about (6) dumps and the process of treatment of waste in most ways random and unhealthy, and lead to the collection of insects and animals around. 2- Near the dumps of residential communities less than 500 m, which poses a risk to their health due to exposure to vapors and odors unpleasant. 3 - Non-compliance of these dumps with the agreed Basel environmental standards, as far away from the wells as the complex of Al Asilah and Al Nawariya dump ,and far from the valleys, such as the dumps of Al Sharaya, Al Khadra, Al Akashiya, Wali Al Ahd and Al Nawariya, where the situation increases the pollution of surface water and groundwater. 4 -The field study showed that most of the waste is waste of construction and demolition, plastic waste and paper, while organic waste is very few. 5- The study recommends the removal of waste by the responsible authorities and the closure of these dumps and the imposition of continuous environmental control to prevent potential environmental hazards. 6- The study recommends the need to review the legal systems in the field of solid waste management, explaining the responsibility of each body and its role in waste management, as well as putting deterrent penalties for anyone who contravenes the guidelines and instructions for sound waste management. Finally, the researcher wishes that this study and its findings have played an active role in the field of random landfills and their impact on the environment of the city of Makkah. The research contained 62 figures including maps, graphs, 10 tables and six pictures.
