Abstract : Background Inpatient readmissions among patients with schizophrenia can be a burden and disruptive for patients, their families, and mental health care systems. Objectives 1. To estimate the readmission rate among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. 2. To identify the association between hospitalization length and readmission risk among patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Methodology A retrospective cohort study included 145 patients admitted to Eradah and Mental Health complex in Jeddah during the study period from 1st July to 31st December 2018. Results Males constitute 84.8% of the study sample. Also, only 5.5% of the patients were employed, and the higher proportion was not. The readmission rate within one year was 36.6% of the total admitted patients, and the average length of stay was 49.1 days. There was no association between readmission and the length of stay in the current study. This study indicates that follow-up to outpatient care predicts readmission within one year. Recommendations The current study recommends improving transitions from psychiatric inpatient to outpatient care which may help lower the risk of readmissions and prevent future hospitalization.
