Abstract : Study Objectives: The study aims at defining unemployment and its social effects on the youth and to identify unemployment and its effects on high rates of delay in the age of marriage among youth. The study also aims at identifying unemployment and its effects in the high rate of divorce, also it aims at knowing the effect and the relationship between unemployment and drug addiction among the youth in Lagos Nigeria, which are attributed to the following variables: (gender, educational level, continuing education, period of leaving education, age, place of residence, marital status, work status, sources of income, and alcohol/drug use). Study Methodology and Tools: The researcher used social survey methodology in populating the study data where field data was populated and analyzed to make it easier to deal with description and analysis, in order to analyze the problem of unemployment and its social effect on youth. The study population comprises of young men and women in the city of Lagos-Nigeria, and 500 responses were gathered from the youths in the city within the year 2022 with (57%) male and (43%) females, where they were selected based on the possibility of their impacts on the results of the study, in other to general indication about the respondents. Results of the Study and Recommendations: The study found that the among the sample 80% agreed on the existence of relationship between unemployment and delay in marriage, while 76.8% agreed that there is relationship between divorce and unemployment, and 72.8% agreed on the relationship between unemployment and drug abuse among youth in Lagos, Nigeria. The study shows no statistical significance difference between the average opinion of the study sample toward the social effect of unemployment in some variable, like gender, educational level, residence, employment status and source of income which indicates the homogeneity in the answer of the study sample. The study also shows that there is a significant difference in the opinion of the study sample on the relationship between unemployment and drug abuse and also divorce which was derived from the two categories of employed and unemployed youths with a higher arithmetic mean. In light of the results of the study, the researcher recommended adopting and implementing the recommendations and working towards reducing the burdens of marriage and reducing its expenses in order to avoid delaying marriage among the youth, as well as conducting courses and seminars for the youth to raise awareness of the dangers of unemployment and drug abuse. The study also urged on the necessity of conducting awareness and counseling sessions for women on maintaining the family and participating in assisting husbands for living expenses.
