Abstract : In the present work, the prezoeal and zoeal stages of trapeziid and thalamitid crabs, and megalopal and post-larval stages of thalamitid crabs have been morphologically described and compared with their congeners. Two species of prezoeas of Trapezia lutea and T. tigrina, are morphologically described herein for the first time. In prezoeas of both species, carapacial spines are absent. Four similarities found on other morphological features. The setations of antennule, maxilla, maxillule and maxillipeds I and II of these two species vary. The basis of the maxillule of T. tigrina has hairs and this is a unique feature. Compared with prezoeas, the first zoeas have more number of setae. Segments of different appendages are also more developed in the first zoea. The present study reveals that the first zoeas of different species of Trapezia have more morphological resemblances. The larvae of Thalamita danae and T. poissonii were reared in the laboratory to the fourth and third zoeal stage. There are three morphological similarities between the congeners of the first zoeas of Thalamita spp. The number of setae on different appendages increased as the larval stages advanced. The anterodorsal setae were not found in the first zoeas of T. danae and T. poissonii, and they developed in later stages. Several morphological features reveal that zoea IV of T. danae in the present study is the final zoeal stage. The morphological features of the meroplankton megalopa of Thalamita spp. are first-time described herein and compared with those of the megalops of T. pelsarti and T. danae. Few features are found commonly between these species and several differences are also found between these species. The first crabs of Thalamita cf. chaptalli reared from meroplanktons megalops are morphologically described herein and identified by molecular analysis. The morphological similarities found among Thalamita chaptalli, T. crenata and T. danae are enlisted. Some minute appendages and the newly recorded morphological features found are described with the aid of scanning electron microscope (SEM) images.
